Cross Country Newsletter (11/12/12)
It was a beautiful Crisp morning at Mt Sac for our prelims.  What an exciting set of races!  I was proud of the effort put forth by all of our athletes, and I would like to thank all of those who came to cheer on the team.
The boys finished 8th in their heat (66th out of all 540 schools contesting cross country in the CIF-SS), with a time of 81:58 on this hilly, challenging course.  While the boys’ team does not go on to CIF finals, Jackson Marshall is able to go on as an individual with a time of 15:24 (# 27 runner in the entire meet). I would like to congratulate all the boys on their hard work.  You can take pride in what you have accomplished. This has been a good experience for a young team, and I look forward to next year for you.  Justin, as our only senior boy, I’d like to say I am proud of how you ended this season.
For the Girls team, they finished 3rd in their heat (16th out of all the 540 schools that contest cross country in the CIF-SS), with a time of 94:12, and are continuing on to CIF Finals.  Great Job Ladies!
Next week (at Mt. Sac again) will be the most challenging race of the season to date, as we face some of the best schools in the State.  We need to remain focused, continue our training, and be ready both mentally and physically to run a great race next Saturday.
Athletes of the Meet:  Jackson Marshall (15:24) took 5th in his heat, and continues on to CIF Finals and  Alyssa Gutcher (18:26) took 11th in her heat, to lead the girls to CIF Finals.

CIF Finals Schedule:

Boys D2 Race (Jackson): 9:05
Girls D2 Race: 10:05

Cross Country Newsletter 11/5/2012
Congratulations to all at the league finals!  As predicted, the races were exciting, the weather was perfect, and the course was great.   There were 57 new PR’s, even after the great meet last week which had 61 new PR’s!  All week long, we have talked about this meet, and how it will be the last one of the season for most of our athletes.  I was proud of how pumped up everyone was at the meet, and how everyone got out there and ran their best.
The boys  Varsity team  took 2nd in the race, and 2nd in the league.  Jackson Marshall was the League Champion with a time of 14:58!  Jake Suiste came in 2nd for the league with a new PR time of 15:11, and Ralphy Lara took 10th in the League with a time of 15:49.  Christian Choi ran a new PR (16:23), Dariuss Chriss ran a new PR of (16:36), Justin Larius ran a solid 16:38, and Anish Reddy also ran a new PR of (16:53).
JV boys took 2nd in the race, and finished 1st in the league.  Great job goes out to Adar Karny for taking 2nd in the JV with a new PR of 16:48.
Frosh/soph boys took 2nd at the meet and finished 2nd in league.  This would not have been possible if the boys had not run all 5 runners with only a 14 seconds between them.
On the girls side, Varsity took 1st in the race, and 1st in the league.  Maddy Bradford has a new PR to take 2nd as an individual with a time of 17:32.  She was followed by Kyle Oefelein in 4th with a new PR of 17:54.  Alyssa Gutcher came in 5th overall with a time of 18:00, followed by Olivia Rodriguez in 9th place with a new PR of 18:18.  Ana-Paola came in 10th, with a new PR of 18:20, and Emilie Birchler came in 14th with a PR of 18:32. Rounding out the girls team was Hannah O’Conner who was 25th, with a time of 19:04.
JV girls took 2nd in their race, and 2nd in the league.  Alexis took first in the JV race with a time of 18:50, followed by Lauren Chen (19:20) and Jackie Foley (19:32).
Frosh/Soph girls took 3rd in their race and 3rd in their league.  Our top 5 were Katie Peterson (20:11), Rini Jablonski (20:13), Sophie Huisken (20:22), Rachel Oliver (20:36), and Nicole Ledina (20:39)
Great Job everyone!
Both our Varsity teams are continuing on to CIF Prelims this coming Saturday at Mt. Sac.  The course is a hilly course, something our Monday hill workouts, as well as races like Sunny hills and Kit Carson has prepared us well for.

Athlete of the Meet:   Jake Suiste ran an new PR time of 15:11 and 2nd in the league.  On the girls side, Maddy Bradford and Kyle Oefelein both ran great races to lead the Varsity girls.  Maddy ran a 17:32, for a new PR and a 2nd place finish in the league, and Kyle ran an excellent race breaking 18:00 for the first time, finishing 4th in the league!
Week Schedule:
Non Varsity athletes:
1.       You need to check in every day.  If you are switching to a sport other than Track, please contact that coach and go to the counseling office to get the proper paperwork.  If you are continuing on to Track, we will continue to meet by the high jump pit.  I am hoping to get  you some time in the weight room next week, and allow you some time to rest and recover from your season.

2.       Please wash your uniforms and be prepared to return them next week.

Varsity races are on  Saturday at 8:14am for the boys and 9:21 for the girls at Mt. Sac.  We will need to arrange transport to the meet as there is no bus.  Athletes who are not racing are welcome to come, however be aware there is an entrance fee.
Again, great job everyone on the season!

Cross Country Newsletter 10/29/12

Cross Country Newsletter 10/29/12

Thursday was our second league meet at Mason park. Mason Park is a flat fast course, which makes an exciting meet with the opportunity for new PR’s. We had a total of 61 new PR’s at the Meet, so I would like to congratulate all the athletes who received a new PR for the season! I was pleased with all the hard work put out by the athletes as they continued to push themselves to run faster. Keep up the great work!
On the boys side, JV boys took 1
st place, Varsity boys took 2nd place (by 5 points), and Frosh Soph boys took 2nd.
On the girls side, JV girls took 2
nd, Varsity Girls took 1st (by 2 points), and Frosh Soph girls took 3rd.
Very exciting races to say the least! On the boys Varsity team, we had some excellent performances from both Jackson Marshall who broke the 15 minute barrier for the first time (taking first in the meet), and Ralphy Lara who broke 16 minutes for the first time to run 15:40. Great Job guys! Next week we will need to continue working on closing the gap between our 1
st and 5th runners.
On the Varsity Girls side the close spacing between our 1
st and 5th runner helped win the meet. The race could easily have gone either way, but the ladies showed their determination and dedication to pull through. For just about every one of our runners, it seemed like they were being challenged for their place on the whole run, and it was a pleasure watching our girls hold on to their positions and not give in to the exhaustion. I’d like to congratulate Olivia Rodriguez for running her fastest race of the year, and Emilie Birchler and Hannah O’Conner who held off Northwood’s 5th runner, giving our team their victory. Next week we need to be prepared again for an even more intense battle, as both our team and Northwood know the league championship is within reach. We will need everyone to run their best race of the year if we want to secure that championship title.
For many of our athletes (all non-Varsity athletes), this coming meet on Friday will be their final meet of the season. It is my hope that every athlete will take advantage of this final meet (which is another fast course), and end the season not just with a lot of fun memories, but with a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
Athlete of the meet: Jackson Marshall who took 1
st in his race and broke 15 minutes for the first time, and Olivia Rodriguez who ran over 30 seconds faster than her season PR on the girls team.
Weekly schedule
Monday: No Bus, practice is at Woodbridge
Tuesday -Thursday practice as usual at Woodbridge
Friday: League Championships at Irvine Regional Park.

      Warrior Cross Country Briefs

      Cross Country Newsletter (10/22/2012)
Friday, our team competed in the Jaguar Invitational in San Diego County, competing against some excellent teams for that section.  It was a great course for spectators, allowing the parents to see the athletes at a lot of locations.  The hills were challenging, which makes for good preparation for the CIF prelim and CIF finals races.  The boys course is slightly longer than 3 miles, and the girls course was 2.7 miles.  The course was changed from last year, and the distances have changed which make it difficult to compare times.
The girls Varsity took first place in their race, beating out some excellent schools from San Diego, and Trabuco Hills who beat us at OC champs (they got 8 th and we were 11th).  I would like to congratulate the Varsity girls for running with only 35 seconds between 1st and 5th runners.  Great Job Ladies!  !  JV Girls also did a great job, taking 2nd in their race.
The boys Varsity took 5th place competing against some of the best schools in San Diego, Boys JV took 2nd place, and the Boys Frosh/Soph took 5th.
Athlete of the Meet:  Jake Suiste and Ana-Paola ran with a lot of focus and determination, both running great races and contributing to the team results.
      Weekly Schedule:
1         Second League Meet is Thursday at Mason Park.  Bus leaves at 1:30 and you will be dismissed from your 5th period class.  Please make sure you contact your 5th period teacher to get assignments for the day ahead of time.
      2         Schedule of races is:
      a.       JV boys 3:00
      b.      JV girls 3:30
      c.       Varsity Boys 4:00
      d.      Varsity Girls 4:30
      e.      Frosh/Soph boys 5:00
      f.        Frosh/Soph girls 5:30

For the boys:  This will be the most critical race so far in the season.  CDM and Northwood will be competing with us for the best position going into the league finals.  Considering the point spread at the last league meet (48, 48, 49), it is going to be an exciting race!

For the girls:  Northwood is our biggest obstacle for the league title.  We need our girl’s team to keep the gap closed, and have our 3-7 runners stay close to our front runner like you did at the Jaguar Invitational.  Like the boys race (there was only a 4 point spread at the last league meet), the meet is open, no team has a distinctive advantage.  If we want to be league champions we need to get out there run together like you did at Jaguar, and do it as a team.

3         Saturday we have mandatory practice.  We will meet 8am again, and we will be having a speed workout to prepare for our league finals.
4         League Finals are Friday November 2nd at Irvine Regional Park.  The first race is scheduled for 2pm (times for races could change).

      Cross Country News (10/07/2012

      Cross Country Newsletter (10/8/2012)
Our first league meet was Thursday, and it was very exciting!  We had some great racing by our athletes, and some very close and exciting races!  Overall we had 46 athletes get a new PR!  Our Varsity teams both came in second in the league, the boys had a tied score of 48, but lost on the tiebreaker (place of 6th runner)  This race was unbelievably close, with Northwood having 48 points, Woodbridge 48 points, and CDM 49 points.  The girls’ team took second by only 4 points to Northwood.  On the JV teams, the boys started off the races by taking 1st place, and the JV girls took 2nd by only 3 points.  In the F/S competitions, the boys took 2nd, and the girls took 3rd.  Overall a good set of races, which showed a lot of skill from all the schools.  Hard work in practice is going to be necessary to get those couple of points in these races that will make all the difference.  Come to practice every day, prepared to give your best.
Athlete of the Meet:  Hannah O’Connor ran her first sub 19 race at 18:56, and Jonah Bonner who also ran an excellent 16:31 and # 4 runner on the team.
Most improved:  Jackie Foley for the girls running 20:21 and Ken Nakama also ran an excellent time of 17:18, both getting very close to those Varsity times.
Rookie of the Meet:  For the boys, Emerson Choi ran an excellent race, breaking the 20 minute barrier for the first time.  Sophie Huisken ran an excellent 21:14, almost a 2 minute PR and is working her way towards varsity times.
      Next Week Information:
Saturday is OC Championships.  There is no bus as the meet is close to home (Irvine Regional Park).  We will meet at the school at 6am, and leave together for the meet.  Parents, please make every effort to attend this meet, it is a very exciting meet and your cheering and support of the athletes is important.  The park gets very full, and we must get there early to find parking.
      Schedule:
      Race 2                   8:12                        Girls F/S
      Race 5                   8:52                        Boys F
      Race 8                   9:31                        Girls Varsity (D1 sweeps)
      Race 9                   9:43                        Boys Varsity

After the Races are completed, we are planning to have traditional picnic BBQ.
For the BBQ, there are a couple of things we need.
      1)      We need a couple of parent volunteers to cook for the team, and bring BBQ grills.
      2)      A parent to buy the hamburger/hotdogs and buns (you will be reimbursed, just keep a receipt and make sure you do not go over $200).
      3)      In addition, each grade is responsible for organizing and bringing lots of food for everyone.
Seniors :  Condiments:  Mayo, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, onions, etc.
      Juniors:  Desserts
Sophmores:  Side dishes/salads:  Potato salad, fruit salad, pasta salad, green salads etc.

      Cross Country News (10-1-12)

      Cross Country Newsletter (10/1/2012)
I always enjoy Yucaipa.  The course is a challenging one, and the big hill is great for our training.  The weather was on the warm side.  Despite the weather, our team picked up a lot of awards and we had a lot of individual metals.  The bus ride was uneventful (no broken down busses etc), the food and apples at oak glen was great.  Overall a good meet.
      Results:
F/S Girls 2nd, F/S Boys 3rd, Girls Varsity 1st, Boys Varsity 3rd JV Girls 1st, JV boys did not score due to 4 runners.
      The Varsity boys ran a team time of 84:46 with Jake not running that put us 7th in all divisions.  This compares to 82:45 in 11’, 81:42 in ’10, 82:01 in ’09, 82:02 in ’08, 83:12 in 07’, 84:18 in ’06, 84:59 in ’05.  The Varsity girls ran 98:08, a 2nd over all divisions, compared to 94:57 in ’11, 96:35 in ’10, 98:24 in ’09, 100:37 in ’08, 95:34 in ’07, 102:02 in ’06, 97:11 in ’05.
While this meet was enjoyable, we need to keep in mind that this meet was not as competative as our league will be, nor the OC championships.  To do well at these coming meets, we need all of our athletes at their best, and that means we need a good training week, and our athletes stop getting sick.  Yucaipa had far too many athletes not being able to compete because of illness.
Athletes of the Week:  Jonah Bonner ran an excellent 16:52 on the coarse, improving about 1 minute from his time last year, and running the second fastest time for our team.  On the girls side, Emily Bircher ran an excellent race at 20:30, compared to 21:53 last year.
Most improved: Katie Peterson had a great finish, passing both girls ahead of her to win the race!  Brandon Ferencik ran an excellent time of 17:34 to come in 4th for his race and a 1 ½ minute improvement from last year.
Rookie of the meet:  Rini Jablonski who broke her PR on this difficult course, and Andrew Erickson who had a nice new PR of 2 ½ minutes.
      Schedule of the week

      1.       FIRST LEAGUE MEET on THURSDAY AT IRIVNE PARK (To get to Irvine Park: WHS è Alton è Jamboree and right turn.  Jamboree dead ends at the Irvine Park.  Try to find a parking spot by the zoo.  It will cost to park

      a.        The bus leaves at 1:15 and you will be dismissed from your 5th period class.  Please dress at lunchtime so that you can get to the bus on time.  Tell your 5th period teacher that you will be leaving for the meet before then.   Get your assignment for the day ahead of time.

      b.       The schedule of races is: JV boys (3:00), JV girls (3:30), Varsity Boys (4:00) , Var Girls (4:30),  frosh/soph boys (5:00) and frosh/soph girls (5:30).  (there has been discussion of moving the times back if the heat is excessive.  I will let you know if the times change as soon as I know)

      c.       For both Varsity teams, they will be facing strong teams, especially from CDM and Northwood.   We have been working hard, and we need our team to be ready to run at their best on Thursday.

      2.       Saturday’s workout time will be at 8:00 am. The strength and endurance we have gained from the long intervals and hills need to be turned into speed.  It takes a good 3-4 weeks for the speed to gain hold.  No one should miss this workout.  Arrange your schedule to make this time.  This is mandatory workout for all.

      Cross Country Newsletter (9-24-2012)

      Cross Country Newsletter (9/24/12)

Sunny hills proved once again to be a good competitive race for our athletes as we continue our training.  The races were exciting and the weather was warm.  Our Senior girls placed 1st, thanks to our 6th athlete coming in ahead of Etiwanda (the top 5 were tied for points).   The Junior girls also took 1st place.  Sophmore girls took 5th overall, and the freshman girls took 8th (out of 28 schools).  On the boys side, the Seniors and Juniors only ran with 4 athletes, so they could not place as a team.  The sophomore boys took 3rd, and the freshman boys took 11th.  Overall an good performance, and one more step in the right direction for out teams.  This is also the last time we will be running by grade level this season.   Our top 5 boys ran 83:20 (with Jake not running), compared to 79:16 in ’11, 81:27 in ’10, 81:30 in ’09, 82:23 in ’08, 84:11 in ’07.  Our girls ran 95:26 compared to 92:36 in ’11, 96:20 in ’10, 98:24 in ’09, 104:25 in ’08, and 98”46 in ’07.
Last week we started two weeks of heavy training, to prepare us for our first league meet and OC championships.  We need to make sure that each day we come to practice ready (mentally and physically) for this hard workout period.  We need to continue putting in the effort, if we want to reap the benefits later in the season.
Also, I have noticed that some of our athletes are getting tired, both from homework and the workouts.  In addition, some athletes have gotten sick recently.  We have invested a lot of work into our season, and it is important that we be careful not to risk all we have worked so hard for.  Please, eat healthy foods, hydrate well, get a lot of sleep, and take good care of yourself.  We are most vulnerable to colds when our bodies are tired.
Congratulations to the athletes that improved their times, despite it being hilly and generally slower course!
Athlete of the week:  Justin Larios, who ran another PR of 16:48 on a much more difficult course.  On the Ladies side, Emilie Bircher who ran her PR in the heat of the day on a hilly course.
Most improved of the week: Janani Srinivasan  who broke her PR by 3 minutes!  Raz Moyal who improved his PR by 1 minute.
Rookie of the week:  Abigail who ran a great race, getting a new PR by 2 ½ minutes!
Upcoming week: Next week is one of the most fun meets.  Yucaipa has a large challenging hill.  Afterwards we will go up to Glen Oaks for lunch before returning to Woodbridge.  We will have 2 busses going both ways for this meet.  Bring some money to buy lunch, and perhaps an apple pie for your parents!  Bus will leave at 5:30 am.  Be at the school ready to board the bus at 5:15am!

      Cross Country Newsletter (9-17-2012)
Woodbridge Classic 2012 was amazing!  All night I was moving around, and the excitement , the cheering and competitiveness was thrilling!  I heard so many people commenting about how great the meet was.  This year we had 225 school registered to compete, and around 12000 athletes entered to race.
Thank you to all the Woodbridge family for all you did to make this event happen.  Thank you parents, athletes, coaches, parents of graduated athletes, and relatives of everyone who volunteered their time, expertise, and hard work to make this event run smoothly.  We could not have this exciting meet without all of your help.  All of you, created this phenominal event.  You created a special memory for the Woodbridge athletes, as well as many thousands of other athletes and parents.  While many of those athletes from other schools may never know you personally, you gave all of them a wonderful gift, and I know they will cherish the memories of our invitational their whole life.  Again thank  you!
Our teams had a great night of racing.  The boys ran a team time of 79:58 to end up 65th overall at the meet.  This is compared to 77:50 in ’11, 78:02, in ’10, 78:51 in ’09 78:42 in ’08,  79:23 in ’07, 79:11 in ’06, 82:56 in ’05, 83:35 in ’04, 83:03 in ’03, 82:50 in ’02, 83:31 in ’01, 85:13 in ’00, and 86:25 in ’99.  The boys are continuing to improve their times, and are working their way towards their goals.  This is very exciting for such a young team.
      Our girls ran 91:17 to be 16th overall. This compares to 88:34 in 11’ (5th at state for all divisions), 92:04 in 2010, 95:29 in ’09,  96:00 in ’08, 91:03 in ’07,  91:03 in ’06, 92:02 in ’05, 95:37 in ’04, 92:33 in ’03, 95:30 in ’02, 94:53 in ’01, 96:31 in ’00, & 95:11 in ’99 (State champs).  Great job ladies, keep up the training!
Despite the heat, we had lots of athletes get new PR’s and run great races!  Being our home course, and with the excitement generated in a race like this, it shows how much of running is mental.  When you are excited, mentally and physically prepared, you have great races.  If you like what took place on Saturday, then go after it at our workouts.  Learn to put this kind of effort into your workouts.  It is the workouts where you can make the difference.  When the coaches demand your best in these practices, it is because they recognize the awesome potential that is in each of you!  You win races and run fast times long before your race takes place.  “success demands payment in advance”

Athletes of the week:  (This is a really tough choice to make this week!)  Jake Suiste ran an amazing race, finishing with a time of 15:19 (#10 all time for boys, and #5 for Junior boys), Madeline Bradford ran a huge PR for the season, running 17:54 in the rated race.
Rookies of the meet: Rini Jablonski, who ran 22:22 getting an improvement of almost a 2 minute PR!  Austin Bradford (18:18) and Colin Takushi (18:16) both improving by about 1 ½ minutes!

Most Improved:  Christian Choi ran a great race, finishing with a time of 16:48 to be the 5th runner by time on the boys side, and Ralphy Lara ran a huge PR finishing at 16:11.  On the girls side, Kyle Oefeline ran the best race of her career thus far and had a huge PR of 18:16

      Cross Country Newsletter (9/10/2012)
Review:  On Saturday, we got to enjoy our first competition races.  While it was warm, that did not deter us from having an exciting series of races!  Overall our boys came in 17th out of the 48 schools competing, with a team time of 83:16 compared to a 80:21 ’11 (fastest time ever for woodbridge), 82:20 in ’10, 83:24 in ’09.  Our girls came in 8th place overall , out of the 46 schools competing on the girls side.  Their team time was 97:18 compared to 94:21 last year, 96:27 in ‘10, 101:37 in ’09.  Overall a decent performance as we continue to train hard and get ready for our invitational.
Thank you parents for coming out and cheering everyone on! The races would not be the same without you.  The excitement generated for the athletes when you hear everyone cheering makes these races so special.
Athletes of the Meet:   Alexis Abad, running 19:04 in the heat of the day to lead the team.  It was an impressive finish, sprinting up that last hill.  She ran almost 1 minute faster than last year.  On the boys side, Jake Suiste ran an excellent race in the heat, coming in 5th for all 11th graders.
Most improved of the week:  On the boys side,  Christian Choi and Brandon Ferencik, both improved over  4 minutes from this race last year.  (There are many more who have made great improvements from last year, Ralphie Lara, Neal Mandelkern to name a few).  For the girls, it was Bianca Moreno, who improved 1:30 seconds from last year!
Rookies of the week:   For the girls, it is Mikaela Davenport, who improved by over  1:30 from time trials,  For the boys, it is Austin Bradford, who improved over 2 minutes from his time trials.
      Weekly Schedule/Announcements
This week will be a very hectic and exciting week with our invitational this Friday and Saturday.  We will need your help, as well as your family’s help.  This invitational raises the money we need to meet our financial needs for the team, and supports everything we do as a team.  Putting on an invitational is not easy, it requires many hours of volunteers to make this meet a success.  It can not be done without your help, and your parents help.  I ask that each and every athlete follows through, and does their assignments at the meet
On Friday all athletes will be helping host the 32rd Cross Country Classic invitational.  There will be atwo busses to take you to Estancia High School (where the invitational is being held).  The busses will take you from school as soon as 5th period is over.   The coaches will be at Estancia giving everyone their assignments.
